30 Day Picture Challenge: Days 11 through 14

Oh man!  I did it again!  I posted a post with nothing in it!  GAAH!  Thanks to Beth for pointing out my oops.  So, to make it up to all of you, I have officially caught myself up on my 30 Day Picture Challenge.  Phew!  Now if I could only keep up with it...

Day 11:  A picture of something you hate (to make up for the whoops a few weeks ago)

Yes, I despise jelly beans.  Yes, I could have gone with something deep, like hate, or racism, or Satan.  But I have spent the last hour 10 feet up a tree trying to get a dead branch down, I am tired, and I just don't like jelly beans.  So there!

Day 12:  A picture of something you love

This was my Mothers Day present.  I am desperately hoping that the Wii Fit will counteract this.  Because it has already gotten a LOT of use.  Seriously, I don't know how I have cooked for so long without one.  I have my own pizza dough rising on the top of the fridge right now.  Anyone want to come over for dinner tonight?

Day 13:  A picture of your favorite band or artist

I like a LOT of Christian rock.  And country.  And blues.  And jazz.  And oldies.  And...  But I think my all-time fav has got to be Third Day.  Or Garth Brooks.  GAAH!!!

Day 14:  A picture of someone you could never imagine your life without

Yup.  He is a keeper!

Thankful

Ever since I started this blog, Thankful Thursdays have been a regular post.  It forces me to take the time to really look at my life and find those things to be grateful for.  It is so easy to get bogged down, overwhelmed.  Thankful Thursday gives me the opportunity to shift my focus from the negative to the One who makes it all possible.

This Thursday, I am so thankful for:

  • the changing Colorado fall colors.

  • precious time for little cousins this weekend

  • that God sent a dear friend to visit me at my office yesterday.  I know she had no idea I was having a very lonely morning (I had told no one).  And she showed up for a very random errand.  But, God and I know that He sent her because He knew how much I needed to see her and get a hug from her.

  • for my husband's birthday, and a quiet, sweet celebration with his princesses.

  • that God is speaking to my heart through His word daily about the journey He is taking me on.
1 Peter 1:7 (MSG)
Pure gold put in the fire comes out of it proved pure; genuine faith put through this suffering comes out proved genuine. When Jesus wraps this all up, it's your faith, not your gold, that God will have on display as evidence of his victory.

  • that there will be victory in this journey!

  • that I am safe in His arms!

Off With Their Heads!

No, I'm not smoking something.  No, I haven't gone off my rocker.  Although I am close.

Today is France's Independence Day!  Being married to a Frenchie, today is second only to July 4th as to our family's favorite summer days.  Each year, Jerome's parents throw a huge party and all the French ex-pats and Francophiles (French-loving people) show up.  You can read all about last year's shindig here.

Strange as it is, I have started looking forward to this.  We used to dread it, because we would spend the entire week before preparing, the entire day of it running around like psycho people, and end up too exhausted and frustrated with each other to really enjoy it.  Thankfully, we have been kicked out of the manual labor the last few years in lieu of the bakery employees, so now I just get to come and have fun!

I will post pictures later, but I thought I would share some random Bastille Day trivia with you.  Do you know the French national anthem?  It is called La Marseillaise.  It was written by Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle in 1792 and was declared the French national anthem in 1795.  It sounds absolutely beautiful when sung.  I should qualify that.  It sounds absolutely beautiful when sung by a trained choir.  It sounds like a bawdy bar song when sung by my FIL and his champagne-enhanced buddies.

One year, frustrated in my attempts to understand their drunk joyous ramblings, I googled the lyrics to see what they actually meant.  And now I will share them with you all.  Don't thank me yet.  I give you:

La Marseillaise

Let's go children of the fatherland,
The day of glory has arrived!
Against us tyranny's
Bloody flag is raised! (repeat)
In the countryside, do you hear
The roaring of these fierce soldiers?
They come right to our arms
To slit the throats of our sons, our friends!

Refrain

Grab your weapons, citizens!
Form your batallions!
Let us march! Let us march!
May impure blood
Water our fields!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~

This horde of slaves, traitors, plotting kings,
What do they want?
For whom these vile shackles,
These long-prepared irons? (repeat)
Frenchmen, for us, oh! what an insult!
What emotions that must excite!
It is us that they dare to consider
Returning to ancient slavery!

What! These foreign troops
Would make laws in our home!
What! These mercenary phalanxes
Would bring down our proud warriors! (repeat)
Good Lord! By chained hands
Our brows would bend beneath the yoke!
Vile despots would become
The masters of our fate!

Tremble, tyrants! and you, traitors,
The disgrace of all groups,
Tremble! Your parricidal plans
Will finally pay the price! (repeat)
Everyone is a soldier to fight you,
If they fall, our young heros,
France will make more,
Ready to battle you!

Frenchmen, as magnanimous warriors,
Bear or hold back your blows!
Spare these sad victims,
Regretfully arming against us. (repeat)
But not these bloodthirsty despots,
But not these accomplices of Bouillé,
All of these animals who, without pity,
Tear their mother's breast to pieces!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Sacred love of France,
Lead, support our avenging arms!
Liberty, beloved Liberty,
Fight with your defenders! (repeat)
Under our flags, let victory
Hasten to your manly tones!
May your dying enemies
See your triumph and our glory!

Refrain

We will enter the pit
When our elders are no longer there;
There, we will find their dust
And the traces of their virtues. (repeat)
Much less eager to outlive them
Than to share their casket,
We will have the sublime pride
Of avenging them or following them!

Refrain

Translated by Laura K. Lawless and found on About.com

In my defense, the stanzas in between the ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ are no longer sung today.  I told you not to thank me.  Please don't email me to tell me about all the nightmares this song gave you.

And now, I am off to enjoy escargot, stinky cheese, champagne, and lots of cheek kisses.  Joyeux Quatorze everyone!

Saturday SOOC: Where Is Baby Bear?

Katrina had her music program at school a few weeks ago.  I know, I know, bad Mommy is just now getting around to posting the pictures.  I am sorry.  Life has been nuts.

The program's title was "Where is Baby Bear?"  Essentially, all the 1st graders were the storybook characters that come in threes:

The Three Blind Mice

The Three Billy Goats (in white), The Three Wise Women (on the left w/ crowns, and women because they ran out of boys), and the Three Men (errr...people) In The Tub (in front)

The Three Little Pigs (only one of whom actually wore her mask)

The Three Musketeers (who stole the show - too cute)

The Three Bears (The missing Baby Bear is on the right)

And, my personal favorite, the three little maids.

Below is the video of the performance.  All 18 minutes of it.  Feel free to not watch.  Really.  You won't hurt my feelers.  I promise.  I videotaped it because Katrina's teacher forgot all of her stuff, and so that we could show the great-grandparents what she has been up to.

Speaking of which, if any of my cousins could show this to the grandparents, I would appreciate it!

Oh, I almost forgot!  Don't worry - they found baby bear.
