Thankful Thursday that became Letters of Intent Friday

Go visit the Blog Dominator for more LOI fun!

Foursons

Dearest Friends/Readers/Followers/Assorted Stalkers,

I had every good intention of posting a witty and meaningful Thankful Thursday post yesterday.  And then life happened.  And when you are falling asleep on the couch with the TV on and your laptop in your lap at 8:30 PM, sleep wins over blogging.  And, so, like much of my cooking, we are going to make full use of the magical gift of leftovers today!  Enjoy!

Oh, and don't forget to enter my giveaway!  Comments are open until Monday morning, when the winner will be posted.  And if you are a GFC follower, or blogged about the giveaway, but didn't leave me a comment telling me as much, please do so.  Remember, the more comments, the more likely you are to win free caffeinated goodness!

Sincerely,
The Blog Addict Currently Experiencing Withdrawals!

To My Sweet Man,

I know you are still a hunting newbie.  You learned that last year's kill was truly a once in a lifetime experience.  But, really and seriously...

... it's much easier to shoot an elk when you stay awake to see one.  Just sayin...

Shall We Have Coffee?

If you have been around me for any length of time (usually 5 minutes will do), you know about my loves.  Now, don't misunderstand me.  My priorities are God, my hubby, then my kids.  But, right behind them (and sometimes leading), comes my love for the caffeinated beverage of happiness.  The beverage that God Himself had to have ordained, because it is so perfect.

Yes, my friends, I refer to coffee.   That blessed bean of goodness.  The joy of my morning.

And, I love to share a coffee date with my friends.  To sit and sip the goodness, and visit for hours about everything and nothing.

But, as much as I would LOVE to have a coffee date with each of you, Jerome has issues with me state-hopping every week to see all of you.  Sigh.  Sometimes husbands can be so, well, practical.  Sheesh.

So I struck upon a brilliant idea.  It isn't very often that I am able to take time to myself.  To go to the coffee shop by myself, and just sit and read (or people watch) and enjoy my coffee.  And, if I don't have that, I can safely assume that most of you have not taken that time for yourself lately either.

I have, on my kitchen counter, a $10 gift card for one of you to S*arbucks.  I bought it with my own money because S*arbucks knows how much money and coffee they would lose if they actually sponsored me.  And I would be honored to bless one you with it.  I seriously considered buying a gift card to our local coffee shop that I love WAY more than Starbucks (thus making a trip to Durango necessary for one of you - bwahahahahaha), but Jerome insisted that that could be considered cruel and unusual punishment.  Sigh.  So I got S*arbucks.  My only stipulation is that you have to promise to use this card on yourself - to take time to nurture yourself.  Because a cup only overflows when it is full.  Or when Violet gets involved.  But I digress.

So, how do you win coffee and alone time?

Mandatory Entry:
  • Leave me a comment and let me know what your favorite S*arbucks drink is.  Because you know we all have one.

Optional Entries (please leave each entry as a separate comment):
  • Follow me on Google Friend Connect and leave a comment letting me know that you are a follower.
  • Blog about this giveaway and leave me the direct URL link.
  • Call/text/email/FB my husband and insist that he fly me across the country to see you in person (just kidding - he would seriously kill me if you did that).

The contest will be open until Sunday night.  I will post the winner Monday morning.  Now comment away!

Monday Mugs: Pink

Cause you all my brain is just not firing on all cylinders right now!  Go join Oswald Cuties for more Monday Mugs!

The theme for today is pink.  Before children, pink did not exist in my vocabulary.  Not only did I not wear pink, I despised pink.  Having three girly girl princess will change your outlook.

For example, I now take photos of pretty pink flowers:

And pretty little girls dressed in pink, even if I cannot get a single normal smile.

In our house, mealtime pink is both fashionable...

and functional...

... sort of.

But mostly pink is just for fun.

No, I have not fallen off the face of the earth

I am so glad you are all still here.  I didn't mean to go so long since my last real post.  Really.  This was a really hard week for me emotionally.  And when I hurt, I struggle to write.  I started at least a half dozen posts in my mind, but when I got to the keyboard - nothing.  But, at the same time, it was a good week.  I am learning to snuggle up to my Daddy when I hurt, rather than run away.  Emphasis on learning.

Jerome got home safe and sound, so Madi and I are both sleeping better.  Madi has, in fact, been full of piss and vinegar (sorry, family saying) since the return of her accomplice.  They have caused plenty of trouble.

Kat's tests all came back normal.  There was nothing they could see that would cause her pain.  We both agreed that the barium xray was one of the coolest things EVER!  Yes, I am raising a nerd prodigy.  She still has pain, but not as constant as before.  She has been on Prevacid for a little over a week, so that may have something to do with it.  She still goes completely pale and weak when an episode hits.  She has two or three episodes per day while she is at school.  Her very sweet teacher has a bean bag in the corner for her - she lays down for a while until the pain subsides, then she gets back up and joins the rest of the class.  She is tired, and tired of hurting. Needless to say, we are headed to Denver in a few weeks.

I have no idea what to expect when we go to Children's.  We could be up there one day or many.  It all depends on what the doctors think, and what the best course of action will be.

I have also learned a lot about people through this, and myself.  I have had countless people tell me exactly what I should and should not be doing for my daughter.  Well-meaning people, but still completely uninformed.  People who see my daughter a grand total of 15 minutes or less a week, if at all.  People who I haven't seen in years.  I have actually had people tell me that I was accepting and using a tool of Satan by taking my daughter to a traditional doctor.

I cannot help but remember all the times I have given unsolicited advice.  How many times have you?  And how often do we really have no business stating our opinion?  I wonder how many hearts I have grieved in my ignorance.

Catching Up

Well howdy!  It has been a long week.  Jerome comes home tomorrow, Praise You Jesus!  Our home group was wonderful and brought us more food than we could possibly eat yesterday and today.  My friends are such a blessing.  I didn't know how much I did not want to cook until I didn't have to.  They are such a blessing.

Madi is doing okay as long as she is distracted.  Otherwise, we have waterworks.  Lots and lots of waterworks.  She is also still having nightmares, so what little sleep I am getting is interrupted by a scared daddy's girl.

Violet has keyed in to her big sister's sensitive state and has made it her goal to find new ways to torture Madi.  Which makes my life interesting on a moment-by-moment basis.

Katrina had her best day yet today.  She was not allowed to eat or drink after 8pm last night for her test this morning (more on that later), so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it.  She had very little pain all morning.  After she was allowed to eat, the pain returned.  It wasn't as intense, but it was still there.  We also started her on Prevacid, a medicine used to treat ulcers and acid reflux, on Tuesday.  So I'm not sure right now if this episode is fading on it's own, if the pain is minimized due to being NPO for over 12 hours, or if the Prevacid is working.  So, here's what we know so far:

Blood Tests: All negative. No mono, no anemia, normal kidney, liver, and pancreas function. No food allergies, no household allergies. The only airborne allergies are to Kentucky bluegrass and cedar trees. Duh. Everyone else in CO is allergic to these. And everyone, including Kat, have problems in the spring. Runny nose, stuffy sinuses. Cedar trees aren't a problem in the fall. So we know that's not it.

Poop Tests: We don't have all the results back yet. But we know we don't have any parasites. So no friends living in her intestines.

Cultures: Both urine and strep were negative.

We did an upper GI scan at the hospital this morning. That's where you drink the barium and they x-ray your abdomen. It was actually really cool (nerd mom). Katrina wants to get copies of the x-rays to show her class (nerd kid).  We should have the results from that and the rest of the poop results tomorrow.

We have an appointment set at Children's for Nov 10th. If we find something we can't take care of here, or we don't find any answers, our doc might try to call up there and see if we can't get the appt moved up.

If we have ruled out every other possibility, then the only diagnosis left is abdominal migraines. They tend to occur in girls who have a family history of migraines.  Which we do.  Essentially, they are migraines in your stomach.  Which is yucky because it is something you just have to learn to deal with. And kids with AMs as children are much more likely to develop regular migraines as adults.

So, we will hopefully know more tomorrow, and maybe have a cause that we can work with. Ugh.  My brain is exhausted, so I think I am going to turn off the computer now and just sit.  Please forgive me if I have not left comments lately.  My brain is mush.

True Story Tuesday: Saint Poopicus Returns

Life has been interesting since Daddy left.  Saturday, I didn't end up having to take the minions to the store.  A fab friend called right before we left and offered to keep the kids at her house.  I almost kissed her.

Sunday after church I took the minions to my parents' house and I headed up the mountain for a beautiful fall Colorado afternoon wedding.  Well, the reception was slower than molasses moving at a leisurely pace, so I didn't get back to my parents until after 10pm.  I was forced invited to spend the night, and got to see firsthand just how little sleep Kat actually gets when she is in pain.

Monday morning my ninjas parents slipped out of the house without waking us, allowing my girls to get some much-needed sleep.  Kat still hurt so another visit to the doctor was needed.

While we were there, the doc asked us to collect stool samples.  We left, armed with many containers, latex gloves, and a pile of instructions.  On the way back to the office (she spent the day with me so I could monitor her symptoms and, of course, collect the poo), Katrina gave me a very weird look.  She asked, "Mommy, why do they want my stool?"  I replied something to the effect of smart people testing it to figure out what was wrong with her tummy.  Her next question?  "Can we get me another one?  I can't see the mirror without mine."

Wrong stool, honey.  Wrong stool.

And if you have never had the opportunity, let me reassure you that collecting stool from your child is extremely entertaining.  Sadly, a cereal bowl at the office was a casualty of war.  But at least she got to keep her wooden stool.

Seriously people.  I know I'm not the only one who has these conversations.  Go link up with Rachel & Mr Daddy for more true stories!

Read It Forward

So, seriously.  You ALL know you have that book lying around the house.  The one you really enjoyed.  The one you know someone else would enjoy as well.  I have been so blessed by the Read It Forward blog carnival.  It has given me the opportunity to read authors I may never have tried otherwise, to expand my literacy horizons.  Now, go find that book, write up a little review, and link up your post to Julie or Beth.  Because I will be very sad if this blog carnival does not continue, but it can't continue if people don't get involved!

Foursons

Here are the official rules for Read It Forward, brought to you by the Blog Dominator herself:

The Rules:

If you'd like to receive the book I have on my blog today, leave a comment. The winner will be selected using Random.org, just like a standard giveaway. If you have a book you'd like to give away on your own blog, please write up a short review, grab the button, and add your name to the Linky.

1) If you receive a book from another blogger during this book hop, please promise that you'll ultimately pass it on using this blog hop as well. It can be the next month, or two months, or three months down the road-- not everyone has a whole bunch of time to read, so the timeline is yours to decide!

2) Once you receive a book, make sure to add your blog name and URL to the inside cover. That way, the people who receive that book in the future will know where it's been.

3) You can add a book to the blog hop at any time. So if you don't have a book you'd like to give away this month, don't worry! You can add something next month, or the month after, or the month after!

Now, let's get reading!

Oh my goodness!  If you haven't read this book yet, you have seriously missed out on a vital part of modern American culture!  The Amazon product description reads:

A dangerous, homeless drifter who grew up picking cotton in virtual slavery.
An upscale art dealer accustomed to the world of Armani and Chanel.
A gutsy woman with a stubborn dream.
A story so incredible no novelist would dare dream it.
It begins outside a burning plantation hut in Louisiana . . . and an East Texas honky-tonk . . . and, without a doubt, in the heart of God. It unfolds in a Hollywood hacienda . . . an upscale New York gallery . . . a downtown dumpster . . . a Texas ranch.
Gritty with pain and betrayal and brutality, this true story also shines with an unexpected, life-changing love.

Same Kind of Different As Me is a true story, written from the points of view of the two authors, Ron Hall & Denver Moore.  Their upbringings and adult lives were complete opposites, but they were brought together by a woman more stubborn than both of them.  I did not realize how many preconceived notions, and outright biases, I had about the homeless population until I read this book.  SKDM challenges you to look and reach outside your comfort zone, to know a person before you make assumptions about them.  It is difficult to read, at first, because the style of writing is so unique.  But, as you delve deeper into the book, it begins to feel as if the authors are sitting right next to you, sharing their story in person.  It is, in a word, incredible.  And that is all I can share, because to share anymore would mean giving away vital pieces of the plot.

If you would like to receive a copy of this book, just leave any comment below.  I will draw a winner using random.org, and post the winner on Friday in my Letters of Intent.

Should be an interesting day...

Why?  Well...

  • Jerome is en route to Paris with his dad as I type.  We are getting ever closer to closing this deal, but they want to meet Jerome and make sure he actually exists.  Imagine that!

  • Kat's stomach hurts.  Again.  It has hurt since Monday.  Yesterday, she threw up all morning.  We are running blood tests.  Again.  So far, we know it isn't strep or a bladder infection.  Her liver, pancreas, and kidney function looks good.  We should have the rest of the panel, including a complete allergy panel, back on Monday or Tuesday.  If we don't find anything obvious, our next step is to go to Denver Children's and meet with their GI specialists.  All she wants to eat is Grandma's cinnamon pull-apart bread and chicken noodle soup.  Honestly, it is really hard to not worry.  I feel like we are fighting an enemy we can't see, can't identify, and can't even fight properly.  I just want to know what we are fighting.  And I want a way for my baby to not hurt.  OTC pain meds don't even take the edge off.  She is miserable.  Again.  And I have no way to fix it.

  • Madi is weepy because Daddy is gone.  She LOVES her Daddy.  She goes from happy and silly to crying and sad in no time.  We will probably be making a paper chain to help her understand how many days Daddy will be gone.

  • Violet is in rare form.  She was shaking her little booty to the cartoons (kicking myself for not getting the video camera in time) during breakfast.  Yes, I let them watch TV and eat their breakfast this morning.  It's our Saturday tradition.  Currently Violet is trying to find new ways to torture Madi.  Because she can.

  • We have to go grocery shopping today.  With Painful, Weepy, and Goofy.  If you hear screaming, it's us.

  • I have a hard time when Jerome's gone.  He's my best friend.  And the house is too quiet after the girls go to bed.  Although I have grand plans of deep cleaning, extended blogging time, and peaceful time with Daddy.  We shall see how much of it I actually do.

  • And now, I must go get dressed before the minions stage a revolt.  Like I said, should be an interesting day!

Gwaat Papa Bawoom!

And in case you don't speak fluent Violet, I will provide the translation:

Great Grandpa Blume!

Yes, that's right.  Jerome's 90-year-old grandpa drove with a friend all the way from Indiana to come see us.  He rocks like that.

We are, just now, starting to see him age.  His mind is still as sharp as ever, but his body moves just a bit slower.  Mind you, he still keeps up and runs circles around guys half his age, but he is slowing down a bit - for him.

We didn't tell the girls until Monday evening that he was coming.  That way, the nanny only had one day of insanity.  Oh, by the way, the nanny is starting her own blog!  She and her husband are beginning the process of adopting from Uganda.  You can read her blog here.  She also has an Etsy page here where she is raising money by selling her beautiful hand made children's hats and women's jewelry.  Yes, my children are her models.  I can speak from personal experience that the hats are wonderful for kids, and her jewelry is exquisite.  She doesn't have the jewelry up yet, but she will soon.  It is stunning, and so unique.  I have a few pieces...

Anywho, back to Grandpa.  Last night we went downtown for dinner with him.  The girls were so excited.  Violet kept hugging and snuggling him all night.  Katrina told him every last detail about school (even though he didn't hear much of it - darn hearing aids), and Madi just giggled.  Kat is the only one who really remembers Grandpa.  The last time we saw him was for this wedding in Indiana right before Violet's first birthday.  But, nonetheless, our girls were giddy to show Great Papa all their new tricks.

I just noticed we have one kid in long sleeves, one in short sleeves, and one in a tank.  Gotta love Colorado fall!

I love my granddaddy-in-love.  He is such a sweet man.  Ornery, for sure, like most of his generation.  But such a gentle sweetheart.  We talked about my parents' ranch (he used to be a vet), about our fruit trees (he has a massive orchard), and about the girls.  I think he reminds me of my granddaddy.  I am so grateful to have him.  And so is Violet.

We aren't sure how long Grandpa will be staying here.  It all depends on his friend's schedule.  But, while we have him, we are going to enjoy him.

True Story Tuesday

So, I could write my TST post all about how Rachel and my sister ganged up on me on Saturday.  Bullied, really.  Coerced me into revealing for all of the FB world the nickname Rach so lovingly bestowed upon me.

Or I could write about the endless emails that have gone back and forth since that fateful post referring to my new nickname.   I have spewed coffee on more than one computer and snorted drinks up my nose.  I have made my hubby read over my shoulder every night.

But, instead, I will attempt to let Saint Poopicusgate go quiet, fade silently into the distant memories of blogland.  I hope.  We all know it won't happen anytime this century, but a girl can dream, can't she?

This TST takes us back a few years.  A sweet young lady we had mentored was getting ready to leave on her first DTS mission with YWAM.  We first met her when she was in kindergarten.  It was a privilege to see her grow and follow God's calling on her life.

Her 18th birthday fell right before she was to leave.  Her parents invited everyone down to a nearby town to go to one of our favorite restaurants.  We had a wonderful evening, laughing and reminiscing.  When it came time to pay and leave, our waitress came to our table with a surprised look on her face.  She told us that our bill had been paid for.  The bill for all 20 of us.  And, in fact, the entire restaurant had been paid for.

Okay, where are the cameras?  Seriously, are we on Candid Camera or something?  Cause this cannot be real!

For real, a very sweet older gentleman came in for dinner and paid for the entire restaurant.  The staff told us that he does this a few times a year.  We thanked him as we left, truly touched by this random act of kindness.  To this day, I wonder about that man.  If he had family somewhere.  What possessed him to spend thousands of dollars on perfect strangers multiple times of year?

I like to think that, that night, we met an angel.

This Weekend I...

Keys to the Cottage

This Weekend I...

... got these beautiful flowers from my sweet hubby at work, for no particular reason.

...spent a sweet breakfast with girlfriends from church.

... got to fix lunch for over 50 kids kindergarten through 5th grade.

...  had 1 1/2 hours to prepare for a surprise 40th birthday party for a friend.

...  hosted a wonderful surprise birthday party, thanks mostly to some amazing girlfriends who came early to help.

... was able to be at church for the first time in a few weeks.  Man I love our family of choice!

...  TOOK A NAP!!!  HALLELUJAH!!!

... was tortured by the presence of the Three Musketeers and D'Artagnon in the backyard.

Just wait, my lovelies.  Only two more weeks...

... got my FB fix via crackberry and my blogging fix via hubby's computer since my computer has decided to die.  My less-than-a-year-old computer.  Thankfully, we are friends with a few fabulous computer guys.  Althought I'm not sure they appreciate being called fabulous.

...  earned a nickname that I didn't really ask for.  Thanks to this post, and Rachel's wonderful comment (which I am going to make you find on your own), and an all-out FB war against my better judgement waged by the Queen of TST herself and my loving sister that lasted all stinking Saturday, I have earned the moniker of...

... Saint Poopicus.

... which is so much better than my nickname growing up, Tiffany Tooterooski.  Why do all of my nicknames revolve around bodily functions?

Memories To Treasure

Last weekend we made a whirlwind trip to Fort Collins to visit our niece and nephew.  And our brother and sis-in-love.  But, seriously, we all know it was for the kids.

And, although I would rather not remember some of the moments from our trip, we had a lot of sweet memories I don't want to forget.

Memories like...

impromptu pajama party rock concerts

this tiny sweet face

taking every opportunity to earn the the nickname "Wild Minions"

sweet snuggles with Uncle Ya-Ya

and cousin Madi

and cousin Nina

Little Sugar B put up with a lot of lovin in a short time.

I don't want to forget

our four-in-one birthday party

taking all the kids to the best stadium on Earth.  Sorry Julie and Rachel, it isn't either one of your teams.

watching Sugar B soak in her first Rockies experience (doesn't she look fabulous?)

sharing a CO sunset with 40,000 of my closest friends (more people than our entire county)

being surprised by our good buddies from Durango, who just happened to be in town and just happened to get tickets.  Kat & H are fabulous buddies.

It made for sweet memories, watching these two brothers pick up where they left off, even if they were wrangling monkeys.

Although Violet was more interested in the food than the game.

We also got to stop in and see some sweet friends who moved to Denver a while ago.  They have fabulous dress up clothes.

Really fabulous dress up clothes.

Something for everyone!

And a princess who turned 11 on Sunday!

We were away from home for 61 hours (18 of which were spent in car).  And it was worth every minute for the memories!

Letters of Intent

I love Letters of Intent!  I am feeling just a bit snarky this week, so watch out!  Have letters that need written?   Then head on over to Julie at Foursons for more fun!

Foursons

Mr. Bus Driver,

I get it.  You are human.  Just like me.  Humans make mistakes.  But when my nanny calls frantic because the bus just drove past our house without dropping off my daughter, my super mommy senses start tingling.  I am very grateful you turned around right away (after the school called you after I called them) and brought my girl back home.  And I am grateful that you apologized to my daughter.  But, please, please, do not make that mistake again.  Or we will have words about your forgetfulness.

Sincerely,
Slightly Helicopter Mom And Proud of It

To My Fabulous Hormones,

I am not pregnant.  And I am only 30, so I should not be hitting menopause anytime in the next decade.  So, seriously, KNOCK IT OFF!!!!!  My family does not appreciate being dressed in long sleeves during a Colorado Indian Summer.  Nor to they appreciate my new obsession with the thermostat.  In September. And I am tired of Jerome kicking the sheets off in the middle of the night, because, seriously, the man flops like a fish in his sleep.

Princess Kat,

You are so stinking brave.  You started to get a little nervous when they were marking your ears.

But held it together, even when she had to redo one of your ears.

And your reward, for only crying a little bit, but being such a big girl?

A lollipop and Hello Kitty earrings.

I still refuse to believe you are old enough for earrings, even though I am the one who suggested we let you get them.

Love,
The Mama Who Was Not Nearly That Brave

Dear Producers of Under Covers,

Thank you.  Seriously.  Finally, a show that portrays a married couple that works together, figures out their differences, and loves each other dearly.  Not kidding, this is the best show I have seen in a long time.  No cussing, no nastiness - it is GREAT!!!  And they are CIA spies!!!  With guns!!!!  I am so happy.
