This Weekend I...

  • found the new home for one of my favorite memes.  Go see Karen for more weekend points!

  • decided that Fridays, which are already jeans day at the office, will also be "fabulous black cowboy boots stolen from Mom's closet" day.

  • saved $50 on our grocery bill by combining in-store sales, value card downloadable coupons, and print coupons from the Sunday Denver Post.  Considering the fact that I paid $52 for a year's subscription to the Sunday Denver Post, I got a great deal!

  • had a fabulous study night with the best small group in Durango (no offense Jen or Shelly, but we do).

  • got to sleep in past 6:45, thanks to my threats of death & dismemberment

  • signed Katrina up for big-kid baseball and Madi for t-ball.  Chaotic sports season, here we come!

  • got much-needed haircuts for Kat, Violet, & myself.  Madi got caught up on her celebrity gossip and documented the process.

  • tried to keep the kitties off the counter, then gave up and just started taking photos of them.

  • got to go on a date with my smokin hot husband and eat the best italian food in our town.  Oh, and just for Rachel - we went to S*arbucks too!  All for free!  Booyah!

This Weekend I...

Keys to the Cottage

This Weekend I...

  • had a fabulous discussion about Matthew 14 and the struggle of faith with our home group.
  • drove 2 1/2 hours to Telluride to watch our awesome friend finish the Imogene Pass Run in 4:33.

  • took the girls on their first gondola ride.

  • had a picnic at 10,000 ft with six giggly girls.

  • enjoyed a view of the race that is beyond compare.

See the little dirt path that cuts down the mountain?  Right in the middle?  Yup, that is the race course?  Wanna run it next year?

  • enjoyed some fabulous ice cream sundaes.

  • spent the morning at church loving on kids & prepping lunch for our Childrens Ministry meeting.
  • came home & snuggled with the big kid on the couch.
  • ended up taking big kid to the ER to find two broken fingers.

Can you guess the subject of this weeks True Story Tuesday?

Letters of Intent

Anyone else glad it's Friday?  Oh man, I am needing some therapy this week.  If you are too, go visit Julie the one-armed bandit for some more fun letters!

Foursons

Dear Amy,

What a sweet bloggy friend you've become!  I can always count on you for a word of encouragement or great giggle.  I am so, so, so, so stinkin sorry I completely forgot about the award you gave me so long ago!  I have mommy brain.  Which means I have completely lost my brain for the next 25-or-so years.  And I was so excited to get my very first blog award too!  Please, please forgive me.  See, I'm posting about it now!

The Blog With Substance Award has just 2 simple rules: sum up your blogging philosophy in 5 words and pass the award onto 5 other bloggers!

My blogging philosophy:  To honor Christ through humor

And now, the wonderful bloggers I would like to pass this award on to (trying not to pick someone who has already been chosen.  Bad memories from elementary school):

Kimber from Day in the Life of a Girl Named Kimber
my LSU-lovin, beautiful-daughter raising, gorgeous southern belle

Jill from Durango Palmers
one of my oldest and dearest friends, and the most honest person I know

Ashley from What's On My Mind
a sweet fellow band geek and mama of a stinkin cute little boy (almost 2 stinkin cute little boys)

Shana from Blaze N Crochet
This mama is amazing to keep up with Blaze, host some crazy giveaways, and have time to be all crafty!

Brandi from My Three Bubs
Hilarious mama to the some of the cutest boys on the planet, and soon to be mama of a precious princess!!!!!

Ladies, display your award proudly, and pass it on!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

To my bloggy buddies,

Holy cow, y'all are prolific!  I spend two days away from the computer, busy at work and getting caught up on the never-ending pile of Tinkerbell undies, and my google reader is just about to explode!  Seriously, I don't need computer bits all over my house or office (not that I ever read blogs at work or anything.  purely hypothetical situation).  Take it easy on me, ok?

The one who compulsively tries to read EVERYTHING

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

To Our Home Group,

You all are an amazing bunch.  I have so much fun every Friday night.  I am so blessed to have you all as friends.  And, yes, I will even publicly admit that the guys beat the girls tonight, and that we will be cooking dinner for you next week.  Of course, like my friend Jill pointed out, its really not that different than any other night, now is it?  And, yes, we will cook you something other than hot dogs.

Defeat Doesn't Taste Good, But Dinner Will

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Dearest Rockies,

Please start cranking out the wins.  Because you know we have make it further in the postseason than the Mariners and the Yankees.  For nothing other than bragging rights.  Pretty please?

Your most loyal fan

P.S.  I just got to watch Tulo hit a 2-run home run to go ahead in the bottom of the 8th inning!  Go Tulo!

Keys to the Cottage

This Weekend I...
  • had an amazing Friday night with our home group.  I seriously love these people!  What a blessing they are to our family!
  • slept in until 9 AM for the 3rd Saturday in a row!  Please don't hate me.  Please don't hate me.
  • had the chance to just chill out with our family for a morning.
  • spent a wonderful afternoon catching up with my super friend Jill during our annual pedicure date.
  • hugged and kissed all my precious family of choice babies.
  • spent an hour hiding from the lightning under the alcove at the softball fields.
  • spent that same hour holding Kat & Madi as they shook in terror from the lightning.  We have issues with lightning in our house.
  • waded through our stacks of bills & mail from the last few weeks.
  • spent Sunday evening reminiscing with Jerome through all of Madi's photos.  She will be 4 tomorrow.  Where did the time go?
Now go visit Becky for more weekend fun!

Thankful Thursday...Alternately Titled Pbthhht On You Satan!

I should have known. I should have been prepared. But I wasn't. And here I am.

About a month ago, Jerome finally said yes to a friend of ours. This friend drives to Palomas, Mexico multiple times a year to minister to children in an orphanage there. Yes, this is the same Palomas where the mayor was murdered a few months ago by the drug lords. Yes, this is the same Palomas where the dentist was kidnapped just a few weeks ago. This friend has pestered Jerome every time, and every time we have had something going on that would not allow Jerome to go. Not this time.

Our amazing home group put together gift bags for four of the boys in this town. Two of the boys are 11, one is 8, and one is 6. When the director of the orphanage emailed us photos, I fell in love. You can't help it, they have the sweetest, smiliest faces.

There are two alternatives for the children in Palomas. Choice #1 is to live under the protection of the orphanage & school. Choice #2 is to be kidnapped by the drug lords who are attempting to literally take over this border town. They steal children, then force them to be drug mules or prostitutes. Words cannot express how my heart wrenched when I heard that.

Jerome is on his way, today, right now, as I type, to minister to these children. Multiple churches from mutiple states are converging on the tiny town .They are taking presents for each child in the orphanage, presents for some of the children who live in the town, and food for the orphanage to replenish their stock. They are going to have a "Christmas Dinner" (aka hot dogs) with the children tomorrow, and basically just play with the kids.

The Christmas presents they are taking don't seem like much by American standards - an outfit, new socks and underwear, a pair of shoes, school supplies, and a small toy. But, to these children, it means everything. They have no Christmas, other than what is supplied by the generosity of strangers.

So what, you may ask, should I have been prepared for? Weren't we prepared for this trip?

Physically, yes. Spiritually, no way!

I know how much Satan hates the orphan. How Satan hates when the orphan is loved and cared for. I know how much Satan hates Christians who listen to God's call, and obey. That Satan will do whatever he can to discourage God's people from following His will.

I should have expected it.

I should have expected the attack. But I didn't. I wasn't prepared.

This week has been a basket case in our house. Finances, health, emotions, plans, everything went haywire. And it took me until this morning, during a conversation with my amazingly wise and wonderful mom-in-love, to realize what was really going on.

What in the world does all this have to do with Thankful Thursday, you may ask? Yesterday, I spent all day trying to write something for Thankful Thursday. And I couldn't. You may or may not know, but I have struggled with depression on and off since middle school. Sometimes it's not even there. Sometimes it overwhelmes me. And the past two weeks have not been good. God promised me a while ago, through a prophetic word, that He was going to heal me of this. But it hasn't been instant. It's been a "crock pot" healing, as our pastor's wife likes to call it. And, at times, in the midst of my humanity, I allow Satan's whisper to enter my mind. To doubt that this healing is for me. To doubt that my Savior will take care of me.

But, that whisper, along with everything else that has happened this week, is just smoke and mirrors. A distraction from the truth, the reality.

And, today, I am so grateful for the ability to discern between the truth and the lies, to be able to stand on the truth, to again feel the cloud lifting.

The reality is that what Jerome is going to do this weekend in huge in God's kingdom. While it may not seem like much to us, it will have eternal echos. He just called me from the Wal-Mart in Demming, NM. That's a new one! Anyways, they are buying groceries, toiletries, and soccer balls for the kiddos. Then, in a few hours, they will be crossing the border.

Please be in prayer for them. Palomas is so close, yet a world away. And it would be so easy to listen to Satan's whispers, to allow myself to enter the realm of fear. But I can't, and I won't. I have little ones who need me to be strong for them. And I need to be strong for myself. Thankfully, our weekend is really busy, so it will be hard to have downtime just to think.

But, this is why, today, I am thankful to be able to say "Pbthhht on you Satan!"

Thankful Thursday...yes, I'm still here

It has been so long since I've written a post. My life has been so busy lately. I'm working full time, then I come home, fix dinner, hang out with the kiddos, put them to bed, study for an hour, then drop into bed exhausted. I'm studying for my life & health license for work. Not that I want to, mind you. But it was "highly suggested", which translates to "DO IT".

So every night, about 8:30, I curl up on the couch with Jerome's laptop and immerse myself in the exciting world of life and health insurance underwriting guidelines. I know, you're all jealous. Your day seems so dull in comparison to my glamorous life. But really, ladies, I'm just like you.

Anyways...

So, I've been studying. And studying some more. And then, just for something different, I study from the book. I cannot wait for this test to be over. I like having my evenings. I like being able to chill on the couch with my hubby, maybe watch something on tv, maybe do a little horticultural work on my FB farm (darn you Sommer & Billy, for getting me hooked). Blog. But I know this is good for me. In the "a root canal is good for you" kind of way, but still good.

What in the world does this rant have to do with Thankful Thursday, you might ask? Honestly, I don't know. But, I do know that I am thankful for the peace that surpasses all understanding. Even though my days have been literally filled to the gills lately, I am peaceful. I am joyful. I am content. And it feels good.

I promise, I will get back to the blog updates. Our kids do so many weird and funny things, I can't not write them down. But, for now, it's back to studying. At least tonight is home group night - an awesome bunch of people, some sugar-free dessert (don't even get me going on this Healthy Challenge I got suckered into), and some good time to dig into God's thoughts. Gotta love it!

The End of an Era

As I hinted at previously, Jerome & I recently spent our last Wednesday evening at church with the middle and high school students. What a bittersweet night that was! Jerome began serving with the youth in 1998, and I joined him in 2000. What a blessing these past years have been. I love these amazing students, and always will. We made this decision right after Christmas, and immediately felt peaceful about it. That, in itself, is an answer to prayer for me. I had always asked God that, when it was time to move on, He would confirm it to me by giving me peace about it. We have endured many hard times in the years we served, but never felt that peace until now.

A funny side note - along with that peace, God has filled my heart with a passion and love for these students that I have never felt before. At first, I actually said "Seriously, God? Now? You wait until NOW to fill me with this passion?" But, God knew what He was doing. He knew that the passion He was giving me was going to feed this next move in our lives.

This generation that I love is desperately feared and hated by Satan. Why else would we have the problems with suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, child abuse, pornography, abortion? Yes, it is the product of a society, but I believe it is also a direct attack by the enemy of their souls. Satan knows just how powerful these young people would be for God's kingdom.

Jerome & I have been leading a small group in our home for a few years. God revealed to both of us that the problems we saw in the youth, began in their homes. It begins with their parents, their home life. And, to be quite honest, we are tired of watching Satan tear apart families. I know far too many couples that have gotten divorced or are contemplating separation right now.

This is why we are now at the "end of an era". I want to see marriages thrive, reunite, be bold. I want to see husbands who love their wives as Christ loves the church. I want to see wives really learn the true meanings of love, submission, respect - not the distorted, ugly, worldly versions, but God's amazing, freeing, joyful intention. And, please understand, Jerome and I are NOT the models for this - we are imperfect, learning, screwing up and trying again.

My current favorite band is Casting Crowns. I fell in love with their song "Slow Fade", but love it even more now that I've seen the video. This song encompasses everything I want families to realize.

Thankful Thursday... Our Amazing Home Group!

Every Thursday, this crazy bunch of people invades our house, terrorizes our cats, systematically puts EVERY toy on the floor, and raids our fridge. And, every week, we welcome them back with open arms and look forward to the next Thursday. Are we crazy? Yes! Do we absolutely love these amazing people who come to our home group every week? Yes! And so, this week is dedicated to those wonderful families that have blessed our lives in ways they will never understand.

To the Palmers:

What an honor to call you friends. You have been there through so much. You have seen us at our worst, and our best. You consistently challenge us to strive toward righteousness in ALL things, to honor God above ALL else. Your children are a joy, your friendship priceless. You are amazing, & we love you!

To the Randols:

I still vividly remember your first night at our house. What an amazing road Papa has walked you down since that night. You are our examples of perseverance, of faith, of honoring God in everything. You consistently give, not because you have to, but out of your desire to please God & love on others. Thank you for giving unselfishly, and encouraging us down that same path.

To the Dendys:

Oh, our twins! Only God could have planned two separate families to be so alike in so many ways! Your joy of life is so spontaneous, so catching. Even when life's struggles are weighing on you, you still take time to minister to others. What a testimony you are to God's miraculous works, His love of adoption, His presence in the midst of trials. You trust, even in the middle of the storm. That trust is not common.

To the Richards:

You ARE a redemption story - a testimony to fulfilling promises. We strive to make our marriage more like yours - unconditional love, unselfish desire for the other person. You are both so gentle in spirit, yet so strong. People are drawn to you because of those things. I firmly believe that God has a greater calling & purpose for you both in your marriage. I cannot wait to see where He takes you, because I know it will be incredible.

To Mike D:

I admire your optimism. No matter what situation you are in, you can find the silver lining. Not many people are capable of that - it is a gift. You can be serious & thought-provoking when needed, but will let loose & have fun when you can. That is a balancing act that requires skill! We love your stories, your ideas, your passion for life. There is a greater testimony that will come out of your struggles right now - I don't know the details, but I do trust that God can take these lemons and make lemonade! Thank you for joining us for dinner these last few weeks - all of us look forward to our time with "Uncle Mike"!

To the Millicans:

Jenni & Josalyn, the only way I can describe you is sweet. You have both been through more junk than two precious people deserved, and yet your outlook on life is so positive. You are tenacious, a fighter. But you know that your battle is not with the flesh, but the spirit. And so, you fight in the spirit. Thank you for all the encouragement you have given us - your kind words mean the world to all who are blessed to know you.

To the Belins:

Ester & the girls - what an amazing bunch! Esther, you are such an amazing mom! You fight for your daughters, both in the physical & on your knees. You are so strong. It was such a treat the night you shared your "Christian" heritage - the love of family, both physical & spiritual, is so important to you. You are a missionary to the college, and I have no doubt that, one day before our Saviour, He will introduce you to all the people that are in the kingdom because of your influence. You are influential, and you have taught your girls that as well!

To the Hoyts:

You two are perfect for each other! I love watching the friendship between you develop. You are always looking for a way to have fun & make other people laugh. You have loved and continue to love all the crazy children that attack you, and are always willing to pour into their lives. You care so deeply for the people you love - I think that when people really get to know you both, they realize just how much you do love. Thank you for sharing in our quirkyness - it fun to have other "weird" people around!

To the Krupas:

Thank you for FINALLY coming to our group! We are so blessed to have you in our lives. It has been such a joy to get to know the amazing wife that God had planned for Mike, because you two truly are a perfect fit! You are both great examples of true servants - people who consistently place the needs of others before their own. Thank you for the love you give our children - the girls love to see "Poopa & Miss Stepany". You have a wisdom that exceeds your years - don't be afraid to use it!

To the Klines:

What great friends God chose to place in our lives. You are prayer warriors - unafraid to storm the doors of heaven with every need. You speak truth with discernment, and are able to give the perfect word of encouragement. Your presence is like a breath of fresh air - always refreshing & life-giving. You persevere through the storms, but are unafraid to share with others that you are in a storm - that transparency is unusual. I am delighted to see where God is going to take you next - it's gonna be big!

To the Beachs:

Yes, I know - they haven't actually shown up on Thursday nights yet. But, there are bonds that go beyond the physical with this family. You are a serving, loving family. You actively look for a need, then figure out how to meet it. You don't just sit around waiting for someone else to tell you. You have been through so much as a family, and you fight as a family. This is a tight-knit bunch! It is unusual these days to see a family with older children who are so respectful of their parents. That type of respect takes a lot of dedication. Thanks for being an example of successful parenting to the rest of us!

We are so honored to have you all in our home every week. Every Thursday, as I write my Thankful Thursday post, I look forward to the evening I am blessed to share with good friends. You all have taught us so much - about life, love, friendship, honor, service, family, prayer, devotion, God. Thank you, my friends!
